Nargis Fakhri Ad Sparks Criticism in Pakistan

Nargis Fakhri is a US born Pakistani model. Nargis Fakhri has also been a part of many Bollywood movies. Nargis is a bold girl indeed. Nargis has been the brand ambassador of Mobilink, a Pakistani telecom company. Nargis has previously appeared in many Mobilink ads. But this time her so called bold appearance have irked the nation.

Like many other I am also feeling perplexed whether its worth this whole controversy or not. A poster of Nargis Fakhri, fully clad in red gown, holding a mobile in her hand, lying down, has been printed in the national Urdu newspaper.

Why this ad has sparked so much of outrage, is quite confusing. There are a lot of things happening in Pakistan. Films, commercials, sitcoms, modeling world, TV shows all are getting bolder and truly speaking, are quite contrary to the cultural values of the region. So its very hard to conclude why so much buzz and stir is being caused by social media specially a war is ongoing on Twitter about the so-called obscenity of the ad.

What Nargis Fakhri has to say about this whole situation, “I’ve been with Mobilink as their brand ambassador for the last 3 years and there has never been an issue like this. I was unaware that they would consider using this visual for a mainstream newspaper ad – an Urdu daily as it was never meant to be. As a model or celebrity, I have always believed in using my persona to help further a brand’s communication but never to have it used where I end up being objectified for my looks”.

She added further,  “Culturally too, my team and I are aware and respectful of what visuals work for what mediums, markets and audiences and hence given the brand’s firm penetration in the Pakistan market, we left it upto their expertise to use the images appropriately,”
