To preserve the dead ones and mummify them is an ancient art. Not only the Egyptians were expert of the art of mummification, there are many other well preserved mummies of famous personalities from different eras and places. Some of these mummies are so life-like that it feels they can wake up any time. Lets have a look at these ancient mummies and know their story.
Rosalia Lombardo is one of the best preserved mummified body of a two years old girl who died of pneumonia in 1920. Her father Mario Lombardo was so grieved of her death that he got her body embalmed by Alfredo Salafia who used his best techniques to keep her body off getting decayed for around 100 years now. Her tiny glass casket is placed in Catacombs of the Capuchin Monks in Sicily, Italy.
Vladmir Ilych Lenin
Though he never wished to be preserved after death but his services and revolution in Soviet Union made others do this. Vladmir Lenin was a Russian revolutionary also known as father of Russian communism. His sudden death on 21 January 1924 left whole nation in great shock. The govt then decided to embalm and preserve his body with special embalming techniques for coming generations. His body is in the most appropriate state and looks like its alive and just sleeping. Vladmir Lenin mausoleum is in Moscow’s red square and is open for public display all the time.
Saint Zita was a pious Italian saint. She spend her whole life in serving others. She spend a tough childhood and faced people patiently who misbehaved with her throughout. Saint Zita died peacefully on 27 April 1272 in the Fatinelli house. It is said that a bright star appeared over her residence the night she died. She was canonized late after her death in 1696. Her body was exhumed in 1580 almost 308 year after her death and all were surprised to see that it was not corrupt at all. Then she was mummified and kept on public display in Basilica di San Frediano in Lucca, Italy. Even today people visit Saint Zita’s mummified body and celebrate her as a reverend saint.
La Doncella is an unfortunate 15 years old girl’s mummy found in the depths of Mount Llullaillaco, South America with two other children and a lot of items like gold, silver, pots and food etc. She belongs to the ancient Inca tribe and is around 500 years old. She was forcefully sent on top of the mountain as an offering to the Sun god as a ritual sacrifice as was famous in Incas. She is not preserved by using any chemicals rather extremely cold weather conditions on the mountain caused her death and mummification. She was also displayed for public in 2007. Now she is kept in a chamber with the low temperature of -18C. She is one of the best preserved ancient mummies.
Dashi Dorzho Itigilov
Its the well preserved mummy of a reverend Buddhist monk of Russia. He died in 1927. He left a testament before dying that stated his wish to be buried in the exact posture that he would have at the time of his death. Dashi Dorzho died and finally buried in lotus posture cladding the same gown that he wore at the time of his death. His body was exhumed by his other monk followers in 1955. And to their extreme surprise, it was not decayed at all. In 1973 his body was again exhumed. A report by Al Jazeera states that salt is used to keep his body in apt condition. Now his body is placed in outdoor without any preserving temperature and people come and visit him.
Its a naturally preserved body of a man. Its an ancient mummy but preserved greatly and without any chemicals. It was found in 1950 in Jutland Peninsula, Denmark. This man is as old as four centuries BC. The body was found in a peat bog which kept it preserved. Right now its on public display in Silkeborg Museum.
The Wet Mummy China
This mummy from Ming Dynasty was found in China while the construction work of a building was on. Labors unearthed this 700 years old mummy of a five feet long woman while the construction project. She had jewels like a jade ring and a silver hair pin in her hair. The wet mummy is fully dressed.
